Honoring those who go above and beyond serving and protecting the local communities is something we should always recognize. We don’t understand how much police officers risk their lives every day to keep the rest of us safe. Therefore, giving our respect in an honorable fashion shows not only our gratitude but also respect to all law enforcement men and women. And that is exactly the case in this story.
Being rewarded the Medal of Valor is a huge accomplishment to receive as a U.S Service Member. More specifically, the Medal of Valor is awarded to an officer who would have performed an act displaying extreme courage while facing immediate danger. Fortunately, nobody was injured or harmed in this story but the bravery shown from a police officer and his team is recognized greatly throughout. Sergeant Andrew Schroeder was awarded the Medal of Valor for an arrest back in July of 2020 in Minneapolis, MN.
Deputy Chief Eric Fors recalls the tedious situation below:
“The suspect reached for a gun in his waistband with both hands. Schroeder grabbed onto the suspect and prevented him from killing him and his partner. An extensive fight took place until the gun was wrestled free and the suspect was taken into custody." The gun recovered from the suspect was linked to several crimes in Minneapolis so apprehending this suspect was a huge triumph for the law enforcement community.
Sergeant Schroeder stated to press, “It was a relief when we got the forensic results back showing that it was the top gun related to 14 weapons cases. The gun had been used to shoot seven people one individual was shot twice by the same gun." Unfortunately, this is a common problem in the cities that officers see daily. "The city police department is doing good work every day to make Minneapolis a safe place to live and to visit. Schroeder, the gun unit, and its law enforcement partners are working around the clock to get guns and those who illegally use them off the street."
The Medal of Valor was awarded to Sergeant Schroeder because of his valiant bravery and courage it took to take down a suspect that was connected to many crimes. Being awarded the Medal of Valor is not only a salute to one single officers resiliency but also to the department and other officers who do what they can to keep our friends and loved ones safe.
Thank you Sergeant Andrew Schroeder and all other law enforcement men and women for your bravery and passion to protect us.
