So why is it important to know and understand police strategies of todays world?
Policing strategies have varying goals including crime prevention, effective us of police resources, or suspect location. Rigorous research can determine which strategies are the most effective in various circumstances. Communities rely on police strategies to protect them from crime and injustice as hard as it is to see sometimes with so much going on in the world. But in return, the police rely on community support and cooperation to ensure safety of everyone. Some of the topics talked about in the Policing Matters Podcast include, officer decision-making under stress, the evolution of special tactics and police use of force options, how network investigations address hot spots of persistent violent crime, using technology to combat gun crime and so much more. These are the types of conversations that many don’t even think should be talked about when it comes to police strategies. Strategic policing challenges the police to deal with sophisticated crimes and powerful offenders in addition to the street crimes such as robbery, rape, and burglary that are the main focus of professional crime fighting.
Community policing emphasizes proactive problem solving in a systematic and routine fashion. Rather than responding to crime only after it occurs, community policing encourages agencies to proactively develop solutions to the immediate underlying conditions contributing to public safety problems.
